Our goal for Ah-shi-sle-pah continues to be to stop the reckless use of coal as a means of energy production. Here in New Mexico, the Four Corners Generating Station and its 775-foot smokestacks continue to bellow forth, creating one of the largest volume releases of climate-warming gas of any single facility in the United States. It consumes more than 15 tons of coal each minute. It drinks trillions of gallons of Colorado River water in an unsustainable push for power.
This facility spews carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, mercury, lead and other heavy metals is its own climate machine dumping 16 million tons of carbon dioxide every year, contributing to over-heating, drought and other impacts to life not just on the reservation, but across the southwest.
Now an area just north of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chaco Culture National Historical Park, is poised to become an open pit mine if we do not stop this last of its kind coal lease from being developed.
At Bold Visions Conservation, our goal is to create a protected corridor of public lands, which extends northwest to the Bisti/de-na-zin wilderness. You see, it’s not just coal, but oil and gas development that is ravaging these ancient lands, rich in archaeological and paleontological treasures. It is a landscape of hoodoos and magical rock formations carved by wind and rain.
We are asking that the President use his Executive Authority to cancel this coal lease that has been active since the late 1970’s and for congress to push for the protection of close to 70,000 acres of land as a new National Conservation Area (NCA), Trail of the Ancients, with a core wilderness area, Ah-she-sle-pah and an expansion of Bisti/de-na-zin.
Senator Martin Heinrich has taken the lead on this issue and we are asking you to contact his office and ask that he write the President and ask that the President use his authority to cancel this lease and help us work to protect this spectacular area for generations to come.
Please take a moment to use the tools to send a letter and make your voice heard!

We're asking your help to promote this cause to Senator Martin Heinrich. The support of the New Mexico Congressional Delegation is essential before the President is introduced to this wonder in the desert. Our novel idea to retire, rather than relocate the existing coal mining lease is an essential step towards truly reducing the rampant effects of climate change.
Below is a letter you may use as is, but personalizing your letter is a great way to show support!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
Dear Senator Heinrich,
I am writing today to express my strong support for asking the President to use an Executive Order to cancel the existing coal lease that threatens to destroy the beautiful and mystical area, known as Ah-Shi-sle-pah.
I would also respectfully ask that legislation is introduced that would protect close to 39,000 acres of land that would create a protective corridor of lands rich in archeological, paleontology and Native American cultural resources, which will stretch from the northern boundary of Chaco Culture Historical Park to the Bisti/de-na-zin wilderness. The proposal includes a 7,000 acre wilderness core that would protect Ah-shi-sle-pah.
Senator you have been a leader in protecting our natural resources and we thank you for your vision and continued support!
The northwest portion of our state has become a National Sacrifice Zone, with oil and gas wells spreading across the landscape like cancer. They have fouled our air and destroyed our precious groundwater. Now they threaten some of our country’s most valuable natural and cultural resources.
Bold Visions Conservation’s proposal is designed not only to protect our natural and cultural resources, but is also to make it clear that as a state, and a nation, we must move beyond fossil fuels if we are to seriously combat climate change!
By canceling this coal lease, we will end one very serious threat to our climate; this proposal achieves both goals and I ask for your support!
