In a few short days we will be leaving for the coast of Florida to begin a journey to North Carolina to film and interview people who care about protecting the Atlantic Coast from the scourge of offshore drilling. Yet, even as I prepare to leave, my mind remains drawn to the fate of wolves across our country and the vital role they play in making wilderness and wildlife thrive.
Across the country actions against wolves--especially with the Mexican wolf remain aggressive, ignorant and immoral. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission are poised to delist wolves, even though Oregon has only 80-90 wolves in the wild. In Michigan, Republicans are once again frothing to see wolves killed and are using false facts and fear to push Congress into action to override the current court-ordered ban on killing.
On social media and fringe television, where hunting shows reign, those who thrive on killing animals of all types relish the idea of trapping or killing a wolf. Many use such shows or forums to defend their bloodlust and complete self-rage, by showing their photos, new toys that make hunting not a sport but a lazy boy recliner.
In New Mexico recently, our Game and Fish Department began its anti-Mexican wolf campaign by denying a long-standing permit to the Ladder Ranch, owned by media mogul Ted Turner, where wolves are acclimated prior to their release into the wild.
The point remains that State Game Commissions across this country do not want to see these--or any other--wolves alive in the wild. We have made this point for the past two and a half years and have gone to funders eagerly seeking funding to take on what is really a small time Mafia operation. Yet, funders tell us it’s confusing, that many people do not understand the issue or that it is more complex.
Here is the reality to anyone that will listen: the Livestock Industry and some of their friends in sportsmen groups, do not like the idea of wolves in the wild. Groups like the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club or the NRA have used their political clout to pressure politicians of both parties, but have the most vocal support from Republicans to stop all wolf recovery in its tracks and aggressively hunt or trap these majestic animals. Their reasoning a non-science based, backwards and self-righteous protection of what they call their turf-Americans public lands.
These groups of lowlife use Governors to appoint Commissioners to their Game Commissions that become the army to enforce the slaughter of wolves to appease their wishes. The result, is commissions across this country that receive their funding primarily from the sale of guns, ammunition, and game tags that are not looking out for wildlife or diversity in our forests and grasslands but rather push for a continued monoculture of thought, ignorance and blood.
There is a solution. It begins with constant pressure which never abates to these commissions. It means going to meetings and calling out the commissioners and the Governor of each state without mercy. It involves the press, a constant vigilance and the push for reforms. It means getting people nominated to commissions that represent wildlife, not livestock. We must get to know each commissioner and educate our friends, follow the money and ask direct questions in Republican states about how endangered species funding is being used by the agency? The time has come to ask state representatives to ask for an audit of the agency.
At trailheads across the country the photos of commissioners should be posted. The bios often are shocking. This group of people is involved in a form of racketeering. In this case it is controlling wildlife, being manipulated by special interests in the public eye, yet well below the radar. In many states like New Mexico they do so with little oversight, often are involved in illegal killings and in some cases are part of groups specifically involved in the killings along with promotion of the killings of predator species. Some have their ties with BIG OIL and never want to hear the word endangered species, thus the need for close scrutiny.
Wolves belong in the wild; they represent the best in family, balance, and determination. Yet, those so-called humans represent the lowest form of humanity. Many of us are tired of allowing ignorance and fear to prevail. If you truly love wolves then join us in the fight. In the weeks ahead our Wolf Action Coalition website will be fully functional. Go to it to learn about commissioners and actions being taken to help or harm wolves and find out how you can raise your voice.
Wolves Belong, Wolves Belong.
