In America’s Colorado Basin, the northwest quadrant of New Mexico is one of most unique and stunning landscapes on planet earth. Known by its Navajo name, Ah-shi-sle-pah is surrounded by historic and cultural nonpareil, with petrified forests, dinosaur fossils and ancient Native American artifacts. This was a Cretaceous Amazon and evidence lies scattered to remind you.
Sandstone hoodoos rise above this landscape like giant, fossilized mushrooms. One is left to feel they have been transported to another planet, or stepped into the realm of faeries, yet all of this lies less than a mile from the World Cultural Heritage site, known as Chaco Canyon.

We're asking your help to promote this cause to Senator Martin Heinrich. The support of the New Mexico Congressional Delegation is essential before the President is introduced to this wonder in the desert. Our novel idea to retire, rather than relocate the existing coal mining lease is an essential step towards truly reducing the rampant effects of climate change.
Below is a letter you may use as is, but personalizing your letter is a great way to show support!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
Dear Senator Heinrich,
I am writing today to express my strong support for asking the President to use an Executive Order to cancel the existing coal lease that threatens to destroy the beautiful and mystical area, known as Ah-Shi-sle-pah.
I would also respectfully ask that legislation is introduced that would protect close to 39,000 acres of land that would create a protective corridor of lands rich in archeological, paleontology and Native American cultural resources, which will stretch from the northern boundary of Chaco Culture Historical Park to the Bisti/de-na-zin wilderness. The proposal includes a 7,000 acre wilderness core that would protect Ah-shi-sle-pah.
Senator you have been a leader in protecting our natural resources and we thank you for your vision and continued support!
The northwest portion of our state has become a National Sacrifice Zone with oil and gas wells spreading across the landscape like cancer. They have fouled our air and destroyed our precious groundwater. Now they threaten some of our country’s most valuable natural and cultural resources.
Bold Visions Conservation’s proposal is designed not only to protect our natural and cultural resources, but is also to make it clear that as a state, and a nation, we must move beyond fossil fuels if we are to seriously combat climate change!
By canceling this coal lease, we will end one very serious threat to our climate; this proposal achieves both goals and I ask for your support!
