Dear Governor Martinez,
I support the disbandment of the New Mexico Game Commission:
I wish to express my outrage caused by the actions of the New Mexico State Game Commission you have appointed. They stand in defiance of Federal Laws that require state participation in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service's (USFWS) Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program. They support Wildlife Killing Contests and even encourage children to participate in the barbaric practice of Wildlife Trapping.
Your appointed Commission is a national disgrace! Their immersion in special interests: the Livestock Industry, Hunter-Trapper lobbies and the Oil and Gas Industry have made it clear that they have no interest in the rule of law, or in the common, 21st century values of the average citizen.
Predators are a critical and important part of a natural and healthy ecosystem, yet your State Game Commission continues to destroy wolves, coyotes, cougars, bears, bobcats and other unprotected species in an wholly unsustainable manner. Your actions and those of the Commission will inevitably cost taxpayers millions of dollars to correct. You have shown no leadership on these issues and seeming pretend that this Commission does not act at your behest.
Some months ago, the critical Ladder Ranch Wolf Management Facility was lost as a result of Game and Fish Commission actions. More recently, they approved unsustainable hunt increases for bears, and began the morbid practice of trapping mountain lions, even on State Trust Land. These actions have outraged and infuriated the vast majority of New Mexicans, who overwhelmingly support wolf reintroduction and saving this creature that is a uniquely enchanting state symbol.
Game Commission actions have serious consequences for recovery efforts, of an animal that historically covered large parts of our state: Governor, you directly have the blood of tens of thousands of animals in your care on your hands, as a result of these atrocities, it is the full intention of all those signing this petition to encourage Federal Authority be used to stop these and further actions of your State Game Commission.
Bold Visions Conservation and the many people signed on to this petition would like to see drastic change in of course of the Game Commission specifically, that in the future that they meet stringent minimum qualifications for management of state wildlife programs and be selected by legislative committee, not appointed. The Commission must treat all species as science dictates that particular species' management, rather than how the Commission perceives its impact on game species. They must also comply with federal guidelines in the expenditure of Endangered Species funding, to reinstate best management practices and peer reviewed science in their wildlife management plans and decisions.
