More than 410 MILLION acres of U.S range lands—public and private—are in unsatisfactory ecological condition, according too an estimate by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This is an area four times the size of California, or 21 percent of the continental United States, and nearly all of it is in the West. These lands are severely damaged, with at least 50 percent of the desirable plant species eliminated, high erosion and weed invasion rates, and riparian areas unable to function normally.

The Subsidized Destruction of the American West
The forest service does no better allowing some wilderness areas to become filled with cow pies, cutting deals allowing some ranchers upgrades in stock tanks and tracking devices for wolves, thus destroying the wilderness experience at the height of backcountry travel. We must do better and it begins with letting our elected officials, and especially agencies that have responsibility to manage these wild and important lands.
